The Ankeny community provides a vibrant retail sector for its consumers. Ankeny is home to well-known retailers such as Super Target, Walmart Supercenter, Menards, Home Depot, TJ Max, Kohls and Petsmart. Local proprietors also provide a large variety of goods and services to the community.

Ankeny has several retail areas. First is Ankeny’s Delaware Avenue, a "Power Center" with over 1.6 million square feet of retail space. This area is located just off of Interstate 35 and attracts consumers from the community and several outlying areas due to its accessibility.

Uptown Ankeny is in the heart of the community and offers a more quaint shopping experience. The retailers in this area plan several events each year to draw consumers into the Uptown area, including the Farmer’s Market and various Christmas events.
